Background of the study :
Vocational training has increasingly been recognized as a catalyst for professional development, particularly among young professionals navigating competitive job markets. In Karim Lamido Local Government Area, Taraba State, the need for specialized skills and career progression has become a prominent issue amid rapid technological changes and evolving industry standards. Vocational training offers an alternative to conventional academic qualifications by providing targeted, practical skills that enhance career advancement. Recent research (Adeyemi, 2023; Nwosu, 2024) shows that young professionals who engage in vocational training exhibit improved job performance, increased confidence, and better adaptability to workplace challenges. This educational approach directly addresses the gaps in soft skills and technical proficiency that are often overlooked in traditional higher education. Furthermore, local industries in Karim Lamido are increasingly seeking employees who can demonstrate hands-on expertise and problem-solving skills. This alignment between vocational training and industry requirements has led to a surge in enrollment in such programs. The dynamic interplay between vocational training and career progression is further supported by policy initiatives aimed at reducing youth unemployment and fostering a skilled labor force (Umar, 2023). Additionally, vocational centers in the area have begun to collaborate with private sector firms, ensuring that the training provided is in line with current market demands. This collaboration not only enhances the employability of young professionals but also contributes to the overall economic development of the region. The emphasis on career progression through vocational training is also underscored by the need for continuous professional development in a fast-paced global economy. Young professionals are now expected to continually upgrade their skills to remain competitive, and vocational training offers a flexible and practical solution to this demand (Bukar, 2025). As a result, the effectiveness of vocational training in facilitating career progression becomes a critical area of inquiry. This study aims to examine how vocational training impacts career advancement, exploring factors such as skill acquisition, job performance, and professional growth among young professionals in Karim Lamido. The study also considers the broader economic implications, particularly how enhanced career progression contributes to the development of a resilient and dynamic workforce in Taraba State.
Statement of the problem :
Despite the potential benefits of vocational training in fostering career progression among young professionals in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, there are persistent challenges that hinder its effectiveness. One major issue is the misalignment between training curricula and the rapidly changing demands of the job market. Many training programs, although well-intended, fail to incorporate the latest technological and industry developments, leading to a skills gap among graduates (Eze, 2023). Furthermore, young professionals often report limited access to updated training resources and mentorship, which are crucial for career advancement. Employers in the area have noted that while vocational training imparts practical skills, the absence of integrated career development support reduces the overall impact on professional growth. Additionally, systemic issues such as inadequate funding, lack of standardization across training institutions, and insufficient collaboration with industry stakeholders exacerbate these challenges (Obi, 2024). This disconnect has led to a scenario where the potential of vocational training to drive career progression is not fully realized, leaving many young professionals struggling to compete in an increasingly demanding work environment. The study, therefore, seeks to address these issues by investigating the extent to which vocational training influences career advancement, identifying specific barriers to effective training delivery, and recommending improvements to align training outcomes with the needs of the modern job market. In doing so, the research will contribute to a better understanding of how vocational education can be optimized to support the career aspirations of young professionals and enhance overall workforce productivity in the region (Chukwu, 2025).
